Department History
After Asheboro city decided they were not going to
respond to fires outside the city limits, a group of
concerned citizens got together with the purpose of
making sure they would still have fire protection.  After
assembling some used equipment and apparatus in a
shed, the
Westside Volunteer Fire Department was
officially born on July 11, 1968 when Station 13 was
opened.  The 15 original members actually had to use
their own homes as collateral on the loan for the station,
talk about some serious dedication.  When the
department first started operation it was the only fire
department from Asheboro to the county line.

The 1980's saw the department re-chartered as
Westside Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department Inc.
as the department  took on some new training and
responses.  This was followed shortly by the construction
of station 16.

The 1990's saw the department switch from an all
volunteer force to a combination department with the
hiring of a full time weekday daytime firefighter and
part-time firefighters covering day shifts 7 days a week.

After many years of planning 2006 saw the saw the
completion of station 23 to make sure all of our districts
residents had fire apparatus within 5 miles of their house.

Though the faces and equipment have changed through
the years, the dedication of our members continues to
drive us to serve or neighbors with the best service
possible.
